PIRITA FOR CHILDREN ASSOCIATION - PIRITA GARDEN PROJECT
Pirita is one of the most marginalized communities in Baia Mare, where 67 families live in extreme poverty, without access to basic utilities such as water or electricity. Many of the adults in this area have never received formal education and face chronic unemployment, often relying on begging as a means of survival.
In response to these challenges, the Pirita Children Association is working to create meaningful opportunities for change from within the community. The Pirita Garden Project is one such initiative, designed to offer children and families a sense of stability, dignity, and hope through hands-on learning.
Using gardening as a central activity, the project provides a safe and structured environment where 30 school-aged children, 8 teenagers, and 10 mothers without employment can come together to build essential life skills. Beyond learning how to grow food, participants engage in daily educational and social activities that foster emotional well-being, promote healthier living, and encourage social inclusion.
This project was selected for its innovative and holistic approach to addressing both immediate and long-term needs in a vulnerable community. By reconnecting residents with nature and each other, the Pirita Garden Project is planting the seeds for a stronger, more resilient future.
